On the east side of the beautiful state of Quintana Roo is the Riviera Maya, a quite new tourist destination. The Riviera Maya is a 130-kilometer strip located on the West coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It ranges from solitary beaches to modern architectural complexes, including hotels, marinas, sports facilities and restaurants.

The Mayan culture remains present in the area through the many indigenous communities still founded here that preserve the traditions, religion and social structure. But the splendor of ancient Maya civilization is most evident in the numerous archaeological sites in this area through the pyramids, "pelota" playing fields, sculpted stone pillars, plazas and temples.

The Riviera Maya's primary quality is its diversity. Here one can choose everything from adventure sports to playing golf or tennis, jungle tours on foot or horseback, many different water and nautical sports, and the cultural and archaeological treasures of the Maya world.

Main attractions

Akumal: Situated in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Akumal is located 100km south of Cancun. Akumal was the first resort on the Riviera Maya. It has grown considerably since its beginnings in the 1950s as an exclusive resort for scuba divers, yet still maintains an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere.

Kantenah-Bay: This bay has its own coral reef with thousands of colorful fish and direct access through a pier. To the south you will find 2 1/2 miles of pure white coral sand filled with palm trees.

Tulum was a very important center of commerce and a place of pilgrimage in the past. Only 131 km south of Cancun, the walled city of Tulum was the first Mayan community reportedly sighted by the Spanish in the 16th century. There are a number of structures in Tulum; El Castillo is the most important. At one time it functioned as a lighthouse guiding ships through the treacherous reefs that lie offshore. Another interesting structure at Tulum is the Temple of the Frescos with its friezes on which the original pigment used to stain the carved figures can still be seen. Tulum is the only walled grouping of ruins discovered on the coast so far.

Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: also known as "the place where the sky begins". It is an area of 530,000 hectare formed by rain forest, lakes, swamps, coast ponds, bays and reefs; all of which also come to be the natural habitat of thousands of animal species, such as jaguars and pumas, white-tail deer, crocodiles, howler and spider monkeys and an astonishing 345 species of birds. About 1,000 inhabitants in the reserve live off fishing

If you prefer an Island we have three amazing ones in the area:

Just 11 km north of Cancun, Isla Mujeres with less than a kilometer wide and barely 8 km long, it is a typical palm-fringed tropical retreat, discovered in the 1950´s when Cozumel and Cancun were mere figments of developers' imagination.

Isla Mujeres got its name from The Conqueror Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, who was impressed by the large number of female figurines he found in temples on the island. Today it is a favorite destination for relaxed travelers and serious divers.

The locals are fishermen and divers who have lived here for generations; islanders who want the island to remain the paradise they know and love. There is only one small archaeological site in Isla Mujeres, this small construction is dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of love and fertility, its unique location its worth to pay a visit to the area.

There are ferries from Puerto Juarez and express boats from Cancun Hotel Zone docks to the main village. Golf carts, motorcycles or bicycles are the most common forms of transportation and are available for rental.

The most frequented and highly recommended beaches are located on the north end of Isla Mujeres, where the shallow beaches of crystal clear waters are calm and have beautiful coral reefs at short distance from the beach.

If you are looking to get away from the busy cities and have a quiet time with your love ones for you destination wedding this is the perfect place for you.

When you are deciding on the place to do your destination wedding you have to consider three main things:

  • Does the place fit your needs? As in schedule, time of the year, weather, is it appropriate for your guests, etc
  • Can your love ones get there easily and can they afford the trip to the place you are choosing?
  • Does the place have the type of ceremony you are looking to have?

Once you find the places that you like and is appropriate for you, then pick two options so you have a back up plan.

  • Make a list of things you both like so you can pick your wedding place according to your wishes.
  • Always take into consideration your love ones for the place and dates since not all would be able to travel any given day.
  • As soon as you have ensured the place and date let your guests know.

Lodging at a destination wedding is extremely important since everybody has to travel to attend the event.

We recommend that you offer at least two nearby hotel options to your guests with different rates so they can choose the option that better fits their budget; even if you decide to host your wedding at a hotel always give a second lodging option.

How to pick a hotel?

1- Distance; look for a hotel that is close to your venue, the closest the better. If there are no hotels near the venue consider a hotel that is not as far, centrally located with additional amenities with in walking distance that your guests can enjoy.

2- Rates; the hotel has to have a good cost benefit, even if it is a 5 star one.

3- Reviews; the best way to value a hotel it’s by the guest reviews, they are available on line.

4- Guest service; it’s always a good idea to call the guest service or concierge desk and evaluate the service when choosing were to accommodate your guests. They will be the ones in charge of making your and your guests stay better.

  • Attach to the wedding invitation the map of the area with the location of the venue and the hotel(s) you selected. Provide additional information like the hotel information, phone, email, reservation deadlines, rates, meal plan, etc.
  • Couples tend to welcome their guests leaving thank you notes or amenities at their rooms or at the check in. Make sure you check the cost with the hotel beforehand and consider it in your budget.

Transportation for your guests

Even though transportation is as important as accommodation, sometimes we forget to consider it. To decide if you actually need to offer that service will depend on your event location and the budget you have. If the venue is not walking distance from the hotel your guests will be thankful if you provide transportation for them.

Other benefits of providing transportation to your guests are:

  • You will ensure the time of arrival and departure of your guests.
  • No one will have to worry about drinking and driving.
  • No lost guests.
  • For attendants with children it will be comfortable to return in the transfer and sleep while they arrive to the hotel.
  • You wont have non-plan extra party hours; the reception will finish with the last transfer.

  • Type of transportation: If you are looking at a small wedding, less than 50 people, it is better to rent vans or similar. For bigger weddings, more than 100 people, the best way is by buses. If you like to have many departure times from your wedding reception and have a big wedding, you can do a combination of vans for the first hours and a bus or buses for the last transfer.
  • Schedules: Try to program different departure times especially for the transfers back to the hotel. It is a good idea for the departure from the hotel to put your guests in specific hours and let them know, this way you’ll avoid delays and having people waiting for their transportation.
  • Put it in writing: Let people know the transfer schedule or the price of the transportation to the venue on writing to avoid miscommunication. You can put it as an insert in the invitation or in the welcome kit or in your webpage, if you have one; you can even ask the hotel to put it by the front door the day of you wedding; the main thing is to ensure your guests know.
  • If you don’t provide transportation: It is ok if you decide not to provide transfers but you are require to give your guest options to get there. The best are taxis so, coordinate with the hotel(s) and venue or your coordinator, the departure times to and from the reception and ask for the cost of each service. This way you will ensure what your guest are going to pay and that taxis will be waiting for them.

Picking your wedding transportation may be one of the last but not least things to do. Although there are many options to choose from you must pick something that fits the style of wedding you will have, that you feel comfortable in and is big enough for your attire.

Options: luxury car, helicopter, yacht, classic car, limousine, carriage with horses.

By choosing the car is very important to think about the season when you are getting married. If it is summer and you want to use a convertible car always have a second option on hand in case it rains. Also depending on how long your dress and veil will be since you don’t want to feel uncomfortable.

If you decide to get married in a hacienda it would be best to use a chariot but is going to depend on the weather your dress and suit you guys are going to use. An air-conditioned car is the best option for you, for the summertime since the bride can get soak in sweat if you do not anticipate this.

  • Check if the car provider includes chauffeur, otherwise you can ask a relative or friend to drive the car that day.
  • You have to establish schedules for the car and preferably check it a few days before to be sure if it got the proper maintenance. It is important to have everything planned to avoid unpleasant surprises the wedding day.
  • Check out if its clean in the interior and exterior.
  • Check if it has full tank gas or at least more than the half.
  • Nowadays cars decorations are flowers on the back of the trunk. But this depends on taste. Prefer something simple and elegant.
